British band Only The Poets have released their newest EP One More Night, and I was fortunate enough to get an early listen. With the help of The Nocturns (Tom Grennan, Cian Ducrot), Tommy Longhurst, Andy "Roo" Burge, Clem Cherry and Marcus Yates have created an EP mixed with different sounds and vibes – from songs you can jump around to, to songs that'll make you shed a tear or two while listening.

With massive tours and an initiative to provide tickets to low- and no-income fans, Only The Poets have set the standard for other bands to follow. You shouldn't struggle to make ends meet just to see them live, and the fans have welcomed this idea while not exploiting it, which is amazing to see.
First up on the EP is the title track, One More Night, an already released single, but a fan favorite with over 1 million streams on Spotify. The energetic melody with the somewhat sad lyrics, interpreted to be about a previous relationship the protagonist wants to go back to, becomes a song you can easily jam along to, and even dance. Although that past relationship is over, the memories remain.
"Started fires, I loved a liar
I swear the stars then, they were brighter
If I could go right back, I'd go back
I'm ready to go"
Next is Gone By Now, another pre-released song by the British band. A sad breakup song this time, with the protagonist coming to terms with what's done is done and there is no going back this time. The song starts calm but builds up as it progresses, giving off the sense of it being a normal conversation turning into a fight and almost screaming at each other. Though they are over it, the memories with their ex-lover are haunting them a week later.
Track number three is I Don't Wanna Be Your Friend. The lyrics give off the impression that the ex-lover is still trying to get back together, and even if the protagonist is giving in a little bit, they're setting strong boundaries and telling them that it's not happening. They're being explicit by singing "I don't wanna be your fucking friend", and they're being very direct. The catchy melody with the direct lyrics turn it into a bittersweet breakup anthem.
"Baby, I don't want your touch
I don't want your love
I see you coming 'round again
I don't wanna be your friend"
With a more uptempo but still kind of sad melody, we have All This Time. All the progress that was made is slowly crumbling. From wishing to have your ex back into your life, although you pushed them away, to regretting that you walked away so easily. If you listen to this song after a breakup, be careful. It might make you cry! And if you need that crying session, It's Okay (Not To Be Okay) is your next song to go.
The emotional lyrics and raw melody of It's Okay (Not To Be Okay) could be seen as another love song, but it's so much more. It's about being there for someone when they need it the most – when they feel as if their whole world is falling apart. You don't always have to be okay, sometimes it's okay to feel sad or depressed or not knowing what to do in certain situations. It's only important not to hide and have someone you can rely on, who is by your side during those hard times.
"Teach me how to love
Maybe that's enough
When we're feeling lost
When the weight's too much
Tell me how to gauge all your secret pain
Maybe it's okay not to be okay"
After a good crying session we continue with Change, a brand new song. A more upbeat song again, talking about someone who inspired them to make a change in their life. After all the bad and sad times, it's finally getting better, and the protagonist is getting out of the dark hole that was the emotional pain the heartbreak caused.
Following are two new versions of One More Night – the Alt Version and the Live version. The Alt Version is a more stripped down melancholic version of the song. It sounds like the type of song you would sing at a bonfire at the beach, surrounded by your friends while one is playing the guitar.
The Live version is obviously much different. With the sound of fans singing along, the song gets even more joyful and bright. It's close to what it's like to be at one of their concerts – and from experience I can say that if you get the opportunity, definitely attend one of their shows!
Last but not least we have Black and Blue, a demo you only get on the physical copy of the EP. It's like we're coming to the end of the story about the two lovers. They've tried to get back together after first rejecting the idea, but realize it won't work out and is now seeing the positive side of it. It's an acoustic demo of Tommy singing while the only instrument being played is a guitar. It's definitely worth buying the EP on CD or vinyl, the song is absolutely beautiful.
I'd give One More Night a listen if I were you. You'll find the perfect song for whichever stage you're at in your life and whichever mood. Only The Poets have created something magical with inspiration from what they themselves listen to, while staying true to themselves and their sound!
